Those In The Health Industry Aren't Always The Brightest Bulbs

Thought I'd share my blood test experience with you. So I get to the lab at 7:30 this morning. I had been fasted since about 9:00 last night...for a pregnant woman, that is a terrific feat. They send me through admitting even though I had just been there on Thursday. I finally get to the lab waiting room and am called in about 8ish. I give them my urine sample and then wait to have my blood drawn. The first girl who tried had a hard time finding my vein, but that doesn't bother me...I'm used to it. Unless you have a lot of experience (she was kinda new at this) my veins can be a bitch. But another woman came in and got it first shot. Ok, so far, so good. Then I am given this really sweet drink, sorta like an even sweeter Mountain Dew, which I didn't mind. Go back to the waiting room and do some crossword puzzles for an hour.

I check the time, it's time for my second blood draw. So I walk up to teh receptionist and tell her it's time. She says someone will be out to call me. Ok, fine. The time is ticking by. My draw was due at 9:10...it's now pushing 9:30. Someone finally calls me in. I give another urine sample. I get my second blood drawn, no problems. So now I know to come back in another hour, which would be approximately 10:40. So I head to the labor & delivery unit to drop off the paperwork they'll need when I go into labor. Come back to the waiting room and do more puzzles.

The Ellen DeGenerous show is on in the background. When I hear it end, I start to panic. Doesn't that show end at 11? But last time I went up to the receptionist and told them it was time for my blood draw, she acted as if I was an idiot, pointing out that when it was time, I'd be called. Hmmmm...these are professionals, they must be on the ball. I'll wait a few more minutes. But I couldn't stand it anymore. I got up, checked the time, and it was 11:10. I tell the receptionist I was due for my second blood draw at 10:40. She tells me to hold on. I wait.

"Oops, they must have missed your second draw."

"So what does that mean?" I ask.

So they tell me to sit tight and they'd call my doctor. About 10 minutes later I'm called back. They draw my blood and put the "hour 3" sticker on the vile. I ask if I'll be getting another blood drawn and am told no. They missed the second one. They were trying to get ahold of my doctor to find out what they wanted me to do. So I give them ANOTHER urine sample and go back to the waiting room. About 11:40 I decide enough is enough. I tell the receptionist that my doctor closes between 12 and 1, so they had better hurry and get ahold of them. The receptionist tells me that they've been calling since 11:30 and no one is answering. I find that hard to believe. I've never had that problem. When you call my doc you get an automated message, you have to press 0 to get to a human. I asked if they pressed the right button, they said yes. Whatever. They tell me I can go home and someone will be in touch. Lovely.

So, depending on my sugar levels, the doc could decide to just leave well enough alone, or send me back to redo the test. Hanging out in the hospital's lab for 4 hours starving to death is just not my idea of a good time. It's hard for me to find the time to do it. If I have to retake it, I'll be severely pissed off. When I took the 1-hour test on Thursday my doc had called with the results by 4 that day. So I'm hoping to hear this afternoon what the results are.

I have to work at TI tonight, though I want nothing more that to call out. But it's the only day I'm working there this week, so I can't. I'm just so damned tired. I can't even take a nap. I have to pick up Kimi, help her with her homework, and get something to eat before I go to work. Sigh. Never a dull moment.

Anyway, that's the update. I'll be sure to let you all know the results when I get them. Ciao for now.
